We always refer to teeth as pearly whites, but the truth is that very few people actually have white teeth. Well, at least without a little help. With all types of teeth whitening products on the market, having a brighter, more confident smile is within reach.

As whitening products become more commonplace, it is important to note there are certain things you should and should not do when undergoing these cosmetic dental procedures.

How Discoloration Occurs

Tooth discoloration happens to the best of us. Even believing that you’ve got great oral hygiene habits can still leave you questioning why your teeth have lost their shine. The culprit can be one of many different things, including:

  • Poor dental hygiene
  • Staining foods and beverages, such as coffee, tea, red wine, blueberries, beets, citrus fruits, etc.
  • Certain prescription medications
  • Genetics
  • Age
  • Illnesses, such as metabolic disease, liver disease, eating disorders, etc.

Any of these things over time can lead to the staining or discoloration of your teeth.

What is a Zoom Whitening Procedure?

The Zoom! teeth whitening system is one that offers you the most dramatic results in the least amount of time. In most instances, this in-office procedure lasts less than an hour. Though, you will want to consider that a professional teeth cleaning is recommended before your whitening treatment.

During the procedure, your lips and gums will be covered, solely leaving your teeth exposed. Then, a hydrogen peroxide whitening gel is applied to your teeth. When used in connection with the Zoom light, the teeth can be penetrated and any stains or discolorations will be wiped away. The gel remains for about 15 minutes while the Zoom! light does its job.

Before you leave the dental office, fluoride will be applied to the teeth to help with sensitivity.

Do’s After Zoom! Whitening

Do consider an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory for any sensitivity you may have following treatment. And, opt for a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth. This feeling should go away within a couple of days.

Do maintain good oral hygiene habits. The better you care for your newly whitened teeth, the longer they will stay white. This includes brushing and flossing regularly as well as routine professional dental cleanings.

Do talk to your dentist about touch-up treatments. These interim treatments can keep your teeth bright and white for an extended time.

Do use your at-home whitening kit provided by your dentist. Use it as instructed, being careful to follow all instructions.

Don’ts After Zoom! Whitening

Don’t eat or drink staining foods and beverages. You will want to remember that the same things that stained or discolored your teeth before whitening can still do the same thing after whitening.

Don’t smoke tobacco products. To keep your teeth from succumbing to more stains, it is recommended that you quit smoking.

Don’t leave bleaching gel in the trays when you are finished with the at-home treatment.

Don’t swallow any of the bleaching gel.

Don’t assume that your teeth are invincible now that they are white again. They will stain and discolor just like they did before unless you take the necessary care and precaution.
