Some people are born with a naturally beautiful smile while most of us are not. Thanks to skilled dentists and cosmetic dental procedures, there are treatment options available to give us the smile we have always dreamed of.

Porcelain veneers are the natural looking, perfect solution. These strong shells are attached to your teeth to mask any imperfections. And, the better you care for them, the longer they will last.

Here are 6 steps to keep porcelain veneers clean so you can get the most out of them.

1. Step Up Your Oral Hygiene Routine

Just because your teeth look beautiful doesn’t mean you can get relaxed in your oral care routine. In fact, you should work even harder and ensure you are properly caring for your teeth. Brushing and flossing after every meal is ideal, but not always feasible. So, stick to brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash at least twice each day.

With veneers, you need to make sure you are not aggressive when brushing or you could end up damaging them. Ask your dentist to show you how to properly brush and floss with your new dental hardware.

Keep your routine strong every day for clean, healthy teeth – and veneers.

2. Select the Right Toothpaste

Porcelain veneers are sensitive to abrasive substances. Because many toothpastes tend to be quite abrasive, you may want to opt for one that is least abrasive. In addition, you want your veneers to continue to look bright and beautiful – as well as your surrounding teeth. Choosing a non-abrasive, whitening toothpaste is a great choice. Ask your dentist’s office for recommendations.

3. Select the Right Toothbrush, Too

As we said above, brushing too aggressively can damage the porcelain of your veneers. This means using a toothbrush with hard bristles can be damaging, as well. Instead, select a toothbrush that is going to be gentle on your teeth.

You may think that a soft toothbrush doesn’t clean well enough, but it does – and it won’t scratch the surface of your veneers.

4. Avoid Certain Foods and Beverages

There are certain foods and beverages that you may want to avoid to keep your porcelain veneers looking clean and perfect. This includes things like ice and hard candy as they can chip or crack your porcelain veneers.

In addition, you may want to watch your consumption of things like tea, coffee, blueberries, red wine, etc. as it may discolor your real teeth — creating a noticeable difference between them and the veneers over time.

5. Kick Bad Habits

Smoking is bad for your health and you should want to kick this bad habit to the curb regardless. However, when it comes to your veneers, tobacco can cause yellow staining over time – even for your veneers.

Protect them by giving up unhealthy habits.

6. Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Regular visits to your dentist are vital for great oral care. Once you have a happy mouth, you may be tempted to skip an appointment here and there. However, you should be visiting your dentist every 6 months for cleaning and examination. This will ensure your oral hygiene is at its optimal level — and your veneers will last a long time.
